Martha Tuttle

Martha Tuttle creates fabric-based wall works, constructing woven assemblages with layers of dyed silk, wool, walnut, indigo, and graphite.

Each layer in her compositions plays with opacity, transparency, texture, and color, though always within a muted palette. Working between textile and painting, she engages with the touch and fluidity of material form; presented as studies in the nuances of fabric materials, Tuttle’s works hold an ephemeral, provisional quality. Using conditions of visual simplicity alongside labor-intensive and bodily processes such as hand spinning, weaving and dyeing, Tuttle’s work reflects upon time, vulnerability, and tenderness.
