Bridget Mullen makes flat acrylic paintings, working both quickly with spray paint and slowly with brushes, to create repeating shapes and cartoonish figures.
Mullen paints free-associatively, combining color gradation and flatness to depict bulbous forms in disjointed layers. Her use of repetition signifies a non-linear, distortion of time akin to the dream-like, subjective quality of memory. Her work employs non-linear narratives that oscillate between dissonance and melody to reject pictorial space and conventional narrative in favor of a place for ideas, creating room for reflections on the nature of perception, time, and the tension between feelings and language within visual experiences.
